Missing home
I LOVE Jewish holidays. Love love love. They make me giddy. Holidays in general make me giddy...but those Jewish ones? Love love love. While being away from home totally and completely SUCKS, it does make you realize what traditions you really value. For instance: I knew I needed to buy plague masks to pass out at seder. Values, people. They're very important.
For four years the Jewish holidays at the Wilinsky house were a full out party. We might as well have had neon glow sticks and techno beats. Year after year, we were fortunate to play host to all of my friends who were unable to spend the holidays with their own families. We welcomed everyone around the table-clothed ping-pong table and introduced some of our traditions. I don't think we realized it at the time but by the end of college- the Wilinskys had built all new traditions with our new extended family.
During Jewish holidays away from my family and my extended family of friends, I desperately miss so many things. Ping pong ball props for hail during the seder, plastic frogs on the table, silly plague masks. My mom has a way of making every holiday feel electric and full of fun. One time my dad dropped the entire brisket upside down on the ground, then my mom picked up and and served the parts that didn't touch the floor. It was hilarious. Every year my dad asks if we want one [matzo] ball or two then announces he's a two ball man. Every. Year. It's all those little things that make holidays great.
For the first time ever, I'm making my own seder this year. My table seats four and my living room has a maximum capacity of about 6. But we're hosting a 13 person sit down dinner. It's going to be wonderful. I'll incorporate old traditions of the past with fond memories and a heavy heart and smile at the thought of brand new Jewish holiday beginnings with my family of friends in New York.
We set the table 2 days. We cooked in advance too. Is this what being a Mom feels like? Weeeeird.
How is this for improvisation?

Neon nightcap
7 o'clock is the best time to play,
It's not quite night and it's not quite day.
As the sun says its final goodbye,
The moon sits and waits for its time in the sky
For 100 reasons dusk gets the rhymes to flow,
That 7 o'clock hour that makes my nails GLOW!

What a wonder
The month of a million visitors unsurprisingly turned into the month of the binge eat. I'm in need of a major detox before Rachel comes to visit and the whole cycle starts again. So I've stopped eating carbs (or my version which means no like bread bread-rice, pasta, sandwiches etc) and of course, BREAD is all I've been thinking about. If my thoughts could talk they would sound something like this:
"I really don't want to wake up for work"
"BREAD"
"Quick! Catch that train!"
"BREAD"
"Schedule a 2oclock meeting"
"BREAD"
breeeeaddddddddddddd. You get the idea. Then, an article came out today about the best mac and cheese in the city. BREADD.
FETTUCCINE WITH ASPARAGUS AND GOAT CHEESE taken with love from Framed
I think I might have posted this one before probably because I want to make it soo bad! Goat cheese rounds? Just shut up.
God. Look at that. Kind of looks like the meal I ate at Frank with my mom. BREAD.

Daily dose of tunes
Reason number #43268 chat roulette is AWESOME.
Stereogum.com explains the video:
For background: A couple weeks back a guy named Merton started posting videos of himself improvising piano tunes on Chatroulette. NY Mag’s Vulture guessed that Merton was actually Ben Folds. He’s not Ben Folds, but it was enough to get the attention of the real Folds, who paid tribute to Merton at a show Saturday night in North Carolina. This YouTube document of the night has all of the penises edited out, but Folds and the audience of 2,000 did sing to a guy on the can, and covered “Free Bird” for a middle-aged guy holding a lighter. The best tribute though, is the fact that Folds’ video can’t match the original. Also this seems pretty special, but honestly, musicians are on Chatroulette all the time. You just have to know when to catch them (between 4-6AM).Office Musik (Dwight K. Schrute vs Weezy F. Baby).mp3
This has been on repeat on my computer for the past 45 minutes and I just realized it. And I've been dancing to myself the entire time. Oooo ooo can't get enough of this song.
Robyn+Diplo? Oh boy.

Terrified
Holy Moly, this morning I went to Queens for the first time. It's a shame that my first adventure had to be one of the most ghetto experiences of my life- I don't know if I'll ever be able to look at you the same, Queens.
I lost my drivers license a while ago and a very nice person returned it to the Queens Police Department for me. Why Queens? I'm not sure, but it was very nice. So I had to go fetch my little driver's license...because I'm an idiot and put things in my pockets instead of in my purse...in Queens. The walk from the subway was terrifying and dirty and terrifying some more. And this is all at 8:30am. I like to think of myself as a pretty un-scared new New Yorker but I think that's just because I hadn't walked to the police station in Queens.
So what I didn't really think about was that the Property Claims Department of the Queens Police Station means where people collect their belongings after they are released from jail. There was a large chain link and concrete wall that separated a large room. On one side of the wall was me and the nice lady behind the plexi-glass window, on the other side were the NEWLY RELEASED PRISONERS COLLECTING THEIR BELONGINGS. I saw an officer walk in with this huge bag of cigarettes, obviously confiscated contraband from the prison. Ya...
The women in front of me in line was trying to get the $200 out of her boyfriends "account" but she couldn't because he was in jail for felony drug trafficking- she was notttt happy and yelling at me about it. I got my ID and literally ran the 15 minutes back to the train. Peace out, Queens.

Throwback Thursday
My all time favorite.
Do you remember the Zeek the plumber episode? Oh my god. I was scared of that for years.
Listen to the music as the show comes back from commercial- how familiar does that sound? I can like picture myself laying in the living room watching this.

Glitt'o Pup of the Day
Reasons I hate my brother right now: he gets to eat my mom's cooking, drive in the convertible in along the coast, hang out with my parents and sleep with the softest, cutest, fluffiest, smooshiest babygirl golden retriever I've ever seen. Look this face!!!!!!

Dare to Bear
Will you please just look at what my favorite bear-loving, reality tv producing, hottie friend Eric did? These mildly disturbing bits of AMAZINGNESS are published in the current issue of VICE and feature the best of the best of the bear gay community here in NYC. Look at that face! Don't you just want to squeeze him and pinch his cheeks? Check out Eric's ferosh blog Knuckle Crack.

It's showtime
Weekend of rain (crazy, crazy, are we in a hurricane? rain) meant weekend of shows (with Ben!!!). My pictures to come later...I don't have my camera to upload right now.
Obsessed with Alice and Wonderland. Ob-sess-ed. I want to see it five more times in IMAX 3D. Burton balanced real life and wonderland life perfectly. I loved the costumes, the acting, minus Anne Hathaway- it's like she watched Amy Adams film clips from Enchanted, tried to copy her and failed miserably) and the incredible attention to detail that was evident in every scene. I loved loved it. Who wants to see it again with me?
Billy Elliot was great. The dancing was obviously beautiful, but we weren't blown away. I think I was still riding the high from In The Heights the week before.
An Education- my mom has been trying to get us to see this forever and now I know why. This film was GORGEOUS so raw and beautiful. Amazing screenplay and even more amazing acting. I think I fell in love with Carey Mulligan a little bit.
An unprecedented documentary series featuring thirty films from some of today’s finest storytellers. Each filmmaker will bring their passion and personal point of view to their film detailing the issues, trends, athletes, teams, rivalries, games and events that transformed the sports landscape from 1979 to 2009.
Basically I was up until 3am mesmerized. I'm going to go as far as to say Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks was one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. (And I hate the NBA). Now I'm obsessed with the 30 for 30 project. Here is a great article about the project from the always amazing Bill Simmons.

Yes, please
These little gems are hanging up at my subway stop. Every time I get off the train I want to do a little dance with excitement. Picture me doing a little leprechaun jig during rush hour because I saw a United State of Tara poster. Ya, it happened.

Mom wrap up
EDITORS NOTE: This post has been sitting in my drafts for a week. I just need to post this already. I'll put up pictures from the trip and more detailed food reviews later!
Ohhh boy. The month of a million visitors continues and I haven't even had time to post about Mom visits NY 2k10 and now Ben is in town!!! Ah it's all so fun.
Highlights of the Mom trip: (full food reviews to come later)
Thursday:
-Motorino in East Village. (Yes, we got the brussel sprout pizza, yes it was ammmazing)
-Waffles and Dinges!! Best surprise evaa- the truck was parked at Astor Place and I have been dying to try it. The man in the truck was so funny and he was starving so we gave him our pizza leftovers and got a deal on our waffles.
-BLT Fish for cocktails
-Raines Law Room aka my favorite place on the planet for lots more cocktails
-Dinner at 1am at Momofuku Noodle Bar- we did sake bombs. They don't even do sake bombs there- it was my moms suggestion and the waiter made it happen. Oh my god amazing.
Saturday:
-Schillers Liquid Bar for breakfast YUM, had a lovely day walking around the LES
-IN.THE. HEIGHTS. My life was changed. We laughed, we cried, we had great seats..it was soo good.
-Then we had a res at Buddakan but I wasn't in the mood so we ate at a little Italian place in Hell's Kitchen. They put a glob of ricotta cheese in their little bowl of olive oil that comes with the bread. Umm why doesn't every place do this?
Sunday:
2nd Ave Deli with all the cousins and my teeny little baby cousin. Then OSCAR PARTY!! We had a red carpet, and wore tiaras and ate tacos.
All and all- a fantastic, fantastic visit with Mom. We did much snuggling, eating and site seeing and I couldn't ask for anything more!
BUDS!
I've been uninspired lately- then bam! Some happiness hits me right in the face. Literally...I walked into a tree. BUT the tree had baby buds!! Buds buds buds!! Spring is here!!!!!
I want to have a tights burning ceremony. I can picture it now- we'll stand around in a circle, our extremely worn out tights in a pile in the center, light a match, hold hands, bow our heads and vow to not wear those horrible things again until October.

Decisions decisions
I need a neon lipstick for spring. It's as imperative as finding the perfect leather jacket. I will not rest until I have florescent lips and black leather on my body- no sleep. None at all. SO which one of these lipsticks will it be people? I just can't decide.
I know the bottom is really purple but I just love it and I think it's so unexpected. Just get them both? Ok!

Absolute Perfection
This is literally incredible. I must watch it five more times.
PS. Mom visits NY 2K10 has arrived!! Posting will probably be a little light this weekend due to the fact that I will be pinching her cheeks and giving her hugs for four straight days therefore inhibiting my ability to type.
For RBS
Nothing gets you nowhere
But everything gets you somewhere
One pair of shoes is great compared to two feet trying to run bare.
-Eyedea
This made me think of you. It'll all get better, I promise.
